One of the top girls basketball stars was shot dead early Sunday in her Harlem building after she and her friends had an argument with some hoodlums.Tayshana “Chicken” Murphy, 18, was partying with friends right after 4 a.m. at the Grant Houses in Harlem when the other group arrived and an argument started.

Tayshana Murphy was wearing a hoodie and may have been mistaken for a man. While she was trying to get away, she was shot once in the head.

A large crowd of neighbors gathered outside the girl’s home screaming in hysteria and in grief as her body was taken from her apartment to the Medical Examiner’s van about 10 a.m.

Tayshana was a senior at Murry Bergtraum High School, a scholastic hoops powerhouse.

There were no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.

Grief counselors are helping a New York City high school come to grips with the loss of a basketball star who was fatally shot in the housing project where she lived. A spokeswoman for Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said grief counselors were at the school Monday. Walcott visited to pay his respects to Murphy’s teammates and coach. [Source]

This is very sad. This is the third incident in the past few weeks with a girl basketball player found dead. What’s going on? Is the sport becoming taboo for girls whom play a sport many say is meant for males?
