No longer in his iconic turtleneck-and-bluejeans uniform and thinner even than he was during his last public appearance only two months ago, the 56-year-old tech guru seemed almost too weak to hold himself up as he prepared to climb into a waiting car in his driveway in Palo Alto. He has been battling pancreatic cancer since 2003.
The car took Jobs, who was initially brought out in a wheelchair, and his children to San Francisco, where he was born.
"He never got out of the car when he arrived in San Francisco," a witness said. "It was as if he was taking a last look around the city."
Since Jobs announced his resignation as chief executive in a short letter to the Apple board on Wednesday, a steady stream of flowers and gift deliveries has been arriving at his home, where he's been with his wife and four children.
Joining a worldwide chorus of warm wishes were words from his biological father, who gave him up for adoption soon after he was born in 1956.
The estranged dad, Abdulfattah John Jandali, an executive at a casino in Reno, poignantly told The Post last week, "Now I just live in hope that, before it is too late, he will reach out to me, because even to have one last coffee with him would make me a very happy man."
"I'd be lying if I said it doesn't sadden me to have not been part of my son's incredible journey," he said.
Although Jobs has undergone a liver transplant and been on medical leave since January, his resignation reignited speculation about the $341 billion company's fortunes.
Although Apple's shares took a 5 percent hit after the announcement, analysts said that Jobs' departure was not unexpected and would have almost no impact on the day-to-day running of the company, which is currently developing the iPhone 5 and iPad3.
Jobs, who remains Apple's board chairman, was replaced by former Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who has been effectively running the company since Jobs went on sick leave.
Jobs, a college dropout, became a Silicon Valley legend after he co-founded Apple in 1976 with two friends at his home in Cupertino, Calif.
His name is attached to hundreds of patents, and he is credited with revolutionizing the personal-computer, music and communications industries with such products as the Macintosh computer, iPod, iPhone and iPad.
